Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi Whirling Dervish Ceremony

The Whirling Dervish Ceremony at Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi offers a unique glimpse into a rich spiritual tradition rooted in the teachings of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi. Established in the 1620s by Abdullah Dede, this Mevlevihane is Istanbul’s third and has been restored to preserve its authentic character. Located just a short distance from the bustling Galata Tower, it provides a serene escape from the city’s crowds.

The ceremony, known as ’sema,‘ is not merely a performance but a profound spiritual journey that reflects the essence of Sufism. Held on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 5:00 PM, the event invites visitors to witness the mesmerizing whirling of the dervishes, accompanied by live Sufi music. As the dervishes turn gracefully, participants learn about the significance of their movements, the symbolism of their attire, and the meanings conveyed through music.

Prior to and after the ceremony, guests can explore the Tekke Artifacts Exhibition and the Dervish Tea Museum, which showcase various aspects of traditional Turkish art and culture. The upper floor features galleries dedicated to calligraphy, miniatures, and other traditional arts, alongside historical musical instruments and manuscripts used by the dervishes.

Kasımpaşa Mevlevihanesi operates under the guidance of the İnsan ve İrfan Foundation, prioritizing the authentic experience of this cultural heritage over commercial interests. The event lasts for one hour, and visitors are asked to maintain a respectful atmosphere by dressing modestly and silencing their phones. Photography and video recording are not permitted during the ceremony.
