Red Stick: A Musical Journey Through Yaşar Kemal’s Poetry is a unique musical performance inspired by the renowned Turkish author Yaşar Kemal’s poem, Kırmızı Deynek, written in 1963. This significant work explores themes of nature, love for humanity, hope, and rebellion through powerful language. The poem, crafted with local dialects from Çukurova, offers an epic narrative with its long, flowing rhythm.
In this performance, Kırmızı Deynek is not presented in isolation; it is combined with other poems from the author’s collection, Bugünlerde Bahar İndi. The selected poems include Kapı (1955), Bu Gece (1951), Hannaya Şiirler (1973), and Benim İçin (1955). These works are thoughtfully adapted into a musical format, creating a harmonious blend that enhances the essence of the poetry.
The staging of this performance is described as a ‚musical narration,‘ showcasing an innovative approach to presenting poetry. The poetic language, influenced by the epics Yaşar Kemal listened to during his childhood, is distinctly felt throughout Kırmızı Deynek. This work reflects both individual and societal sensitivities, and the new interpretation through music elevates the epic atmosphere of the poetry into a unique storytelling form.
The performance features adaptations and music by Emin İgüs, with arrangements by Eylem Pelit. Emin İgüs will provide narration, vocals, and connections, while other musicians contribute with violin, guitar, bass, and vocals.
