Tayfun Erdoğmuş’s Atlas 1/137,035999 brings together more than four decades of the artist’s practice in his first institutional solo exhibition in Turkey. Curated by Eda Berkmen, the exhibition combines works from different periods with new productions, many of which have never been shown before.
Working with plants, minerals, handmade paper, chemical and acrylic solutions, Erdoğmuş approaches his materials almost like a naturalist or alchemist. Through collecting, layering, transforming and experimenting with these elements, he creates distinctive surfaces and compositions that expand traditional ideas of painting.
The exhibition takes its title from a mysterious coordinate-like number, suggesting a newly discovered star, molecule or unexplained code. This sense of discovery runs throughout the exhibition, connecting different scales and forms of knowledge, from botanical traces and geological surfaces to personal memories and cosmic imagery.
At Arter in Istanbul, Atlas 1/137,035999 offers visitors an atmospheric encounter with contemporary art while exploring the intersections of nature, science, craft and traditional artistic practices. The exhibition invites viewers to move between the earthly and the cosmic, the material and the intangible.
