Renzo Piano: Genius Loci

Renzo Piano: Yerin Ruhu (Renzo Piano: Genius Loci) explores the architecture of Istanbul Modern’s landmark new museum building and the six-year design and construction process behind it. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the building was created in response to the unique light, atmosphere and setting of Istanbul and the Bosphorus.

The exhibition offers a closer look at the ideas, structural elements and architectural decisions that shaped the museum, while also placing the building within Renzo Piano’s wider international career. Visitors can discover how the architect approaches the relationship between a building and its surroundings, bringing together tangible features of a site with its less visible qualities and atmosphere.

The exhibition also traces Istanbul Modern’s transformation since its foundation in 2004, connecting the museum’s architectural evolution with its role in Türkiye’s modern and contemporary art scene.

Located at Istanbul Modern in Istanbul’s Galataport waterfront district, the exhibition is particularly worthwhile for visitors interested in architecture and design. As it is presented in the museum’s publicly accessible ground-floor library area, Genius Loci is also free to visit. Its location makes it easy to combine with a stroll along the Bosphorus, shopping and dining at Galataport.
